Ruben Martinez

Ruben Martinez is an author, journalist, and musician. He often writes about immigrant life, globalization, and Mexican politics and culture. Martinez’s book, Crossing Over: A Mexican Family on the Migrant Trail, chronicles a family that lost three sons during a border crossing that went horribly wrong. Crossing Over was awarded the Lannan Foundation fellowship in 2002. His other works include The Other Side: Notes from the New L.A. and The New Americans, which he wrote in collaboration with Joseph Martinez. Martinez has been a guest commentator on CNN, Nightline, Politically Incorrect, and All Things Considered. His essays, opinions, and reports have appeared in many publications, including the New York Times, Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, Salon, Village Voice, and Sojourners. He lives in Los Angeles, California.
