Andrea Davis Pinkney

Andrea Davis Pinkney is the author of more than twenty books for children and young adults, including Let It Shine: Stories of Black Women Freedom Fighters, which received a Coretta Scott King Honor and the Carter G. Woodson Award, and Sojourner Truth’s Step-Stomp Stride, which was named one of the best books of 2009 by School Library Journal. Her book Duke Ellington, illustrated by her husband Brian Pinkney, received the Caldecott Honor and Coretta Scott King Honor. Her most recent book, Bird in a Box, explores the stories of three African-American girls whose difficult lives during the Depression echo those of boxing champion Joe Louis. In addition to writing, Pinkney has worked as an editor for many years in the publishing industry. She lives in Brooklyn, New York.
